星期二我考完试就冲到书店玩,在那摸来模去玩了好久. 没办法英文书书皮太好看鸟!
(这个破手写板真难用! 打中文好麻烦, 要是能用意念输入就好了)
Notable books are the following:
Dalai Lama is huge in HK. He alone occupys a bookshelf facing the door of the bookstore. All his books have titles like "the art of happiness". sounding like cheap self-help books for housewives. (I am so mean!)
The largest section in this bookstore is dedicated to fictional works. Then I found out that I am completely out in respect of modern english authors: I knew only a tiny fraction of authors, such as Nick Hornby ( His books were sooo funny! And I recommend every girl to read it because it gives away many secrects of the creature called man). I believe all authors listed in a bookstore in HK should already be international bestseller---prove that I read books that only grandmas read? Also popular is Neal Stephenson who is actually a Sci-fi writer in my mind. Why put him in these shelfs?
Now I come to Speculative fiction shelf which is in a corner separated from fictions. How shameful I was there! Do the SF books have to wear an indecent cover in order to attract teen readers? Stumbling across this section is like walking into a world full of dragons, plump princesses and alpha males. Give me a break! Asimov, AC Clark and Terry Prechett are everywhere and no trace of my favourite writer, Ted Chiang. Golden age of SF are still imposing.
Awful cover:
Two Books I brought:
Oscar Wilde's short fictions (Penguin classics)
Umberto Eco's "The name of The Rose"
Eco has been my new idol for a while ( a new figure in Gu's UNIVERSE) and this is the easiest book he has writeen. The major theme of this novel is christian church in late medieval time. Actually I'd rather to read Chinese version as both english and chinese edition were translated from italian. However, people who have read the chinese one told me that the translation sucks so much that it almost have killed Eco's genius. So I better keep away from the chinese one.
Our discussion group about Eco
BTW:
I glimpsed over a book called "The boy who loved Anne Frank" and the name hit me as a Deja Vu. Was this Anne that ANNE in Anne Frank's diary and died in holocaust? I remembered that the boy who was in love with her died in the tragedy. So I looked into its back and found out that it was a alternative history which assumes that he didn't die and found refuge in USA, blablah....
BTW again:
I saw GEB on bookshelf for philosophy. It is so nice. I have read the english edition long ago but never finished it. However, one day I will manage to read it through. I consider it a experience of lifetime (same as 红楼梦 which I haven't finished either).
The ultimately fun and smart book on earth:
